What is Project Cargo Shipping?
Project cargo is a general term for the international transportation of extra large, heavyweight, or irregularly-shaped machinery, specialized vehicles, and equipment. Sometimes known as "Heavy lift Shipping", this consists of transporting large and heavy equipment by having it loaded onto a special ocean cargo vessel with an on-board crane, or onto a flatbed trailer.
Unlike regular shipments where all material can be loaded onto a truck or container, project cargo shipping requires special design and smart planning process.
Not all logistics companies can handle these exceptional shipments, which require specialized skills and high level of coordination within a solid risk management system.
Latin American Cargo specialized transport services will respect your budget, by avoiding unnecessary expenses for storage, stand-by fees, or extra duties/tariffs.
Understanding Out of Gauge and Heavy Lift Cargo
Out-of-gauge Cargo (OOG) is
any shipment that surpasses the maximum dimensions of a standard container in length, width, or height. Instead, this freight will be securely transported with special types of trucks, trailers, aircraft, a href="https://www.latinamericancargo.com/ocean-shipping-containers-types-sizes-dimensions/">flat-racks, platforms, or open-top containers. We offer the following alternatives for your heavy lift shipments:
•
Flat-rack and Open-Top Containers: When shipping by sea, heavy lift cargo can be loaded onto flat-rack or open-top containers. These specialized OOG containers are open at the top or sides, so the cargo can be lifted in, then covered for protection.
•
Flatbed, Winch Truck, Hiab Truck, and Heavy-Haul Trucking: LAC’s extensive network in trucking facilitates heavy-haul ground transport to and from Canada, USA & Mexico.
•
Cargo Planes and Charter Flights: When it needs to be shipped by air, large machinery and heavy equipment are a snap with LAC’s extensive resources. Our network sources large or specialized cargo planes to do the job. When a charter flight is needed, LAC will arrange the right plane to fit your heavy lift cargo and your timelines.
Understanding Breakbulk Cargo
What to do when your heavy lift shipment
does not fit into a standard container, or is even too hefty to be loaded on a single flat-rack or platform? The solution is breakbulk cargo shipping.
Breakbulk cargo transportation entails dismantling large units into smaller -more manageable- ones, to be fit into drums, boxes, barrels, pallets, or loaded across several flat-racks. Smaller units that will be then assembled at point of destination. It is still one of the most popular method of ocean cargo transport.
Although it involves more labour than
FCL or LCL container shipping, it remains
the best choice when your cargo is too large or heavy to fit inside a standard container.
It is also the best solution in the case the cargo is being transported to a lesser-developed port that cannot take large container ships.
When Choosing Project Cargo / Breakbulk Shipping Solutions?
Breakbulk cargo shipping is frequently used in extensive projects or fields that need to
move bulky merchandise and heavy equipment.
These include large construction, oil and gas, energy, marine, and
mining, among other industries. Merchandise typically transported using breakbulk might be lumber, raw metals, paper pulp, heavy load machinery, power-generating and refinery equipment.
Among the advantages of this heavy weight shipping method:
• Permits heavy industry and power-generation companies to displace enormous equipment.
• Permits goods to enter lesser-developed ports.
• Keep goods separate (and organized) when they are best used that way at destination.
Our project cargo division offers several value-added services:
- Route surveys and selection of reliable carriers.
- Site inspection and project planning.
- Customs clearance and documentation for Importing or Exporting.
- Arrangement of police/inland transport notifications (when needed).
- Load, lash and secure the cargo at port of origin (or nearby facility).
- Stevedoring, unloading services, lashing and port storage facilities.
- Inland collection and deliveries using various specialized equipment.
- Superior tracking and timing with en-route reporting.
- Final stage delivery with closing report.
