What can I ship to the Dominican Republic?

At LAC, we accommodate all businesses that ship products from Canada to the Dominican Republic.

We help our customers ship a wide variety of items, including agricultural products, machinery and equipment, vehicles and automotive parts, pharmaceutical products, and more.

However, it’s important to note that certain cargo may require specific documentation for exporting and importing purposes and may be subject to certain customs restrictions.

This makes it crucial to understand both Canadian export laws and Dominican Republic import laws.

What cannot be shipped to the Dominican Republic?

Understanding the restrictions on shipping certain products to the Dominican Republic is crucial for a smooth and compliant international trade process.

Discretionary import licenses from the Ministry of Agriculture, and for dairy products from the Ministry of Public Health/DIGEMAPS, are required for all agricultural products.

Importation of automobiles over five years old, vehicles for goods transportation over fifteen years old and used clothing are prohibited, although the used clothing restriction is often overlooked.

Keeping up with customs regulations is very important in the world of international shipping if you’re planning to ship from Canada to the Dominican Republic.

To ensure you have the most current and relevant information for your specific needs, especially in the Latin American market, we invite you to contact us for a personalized quote and expert guidance.

What is the transit time for delivering cargo from Canada to the Dominican Republic?

The time it takes for your shipment to reach its destination can fluctuate based on your choice of shipping method, be it air or sea freight, and the exact locations for pickup and delivery.

For sea freight, expect a delivery window of approximately 10 to 25 days, while air freight can get your cargo to its destination in as little as 1 to 5 days.

Keep in mind that the total transit times will be influenced by your specific geographical location and the ultimate destination of your shipment.

Recognizing that transit times can be influenced by various factors, we prioritize providing precise and current information.

This approach ensures a seamless shipping process and allows us to efficiently expedite your shipments.

Should you choose sea freight or air freight from Canada to the Dominican Republic?

When it comes to shipping from Canada to the Dominican Republic, choosing the ideal mode of transport is crucial. Your decision between sea and air freight could significantly impact your shipping costs, transit time, and overall business operations.

But don’t worry, we are here to guide you. Let’s break down the benefits of air and sea freight so you can make an informed decision that best fits your business needs and goals.

1. Benefits of Air Freight

Choosing air freight to fulfill your shipping needs from Canada to the Dominican Republic has many benefits.

Speed is the number one advantage of air freight. If you’re in a rush to get your cargo to its destination, air freight is your best option. Moreover, it’s highly reliable, with fewer delays than sea freight.

Air freight also offers better security for your cargo, reducing the risk of theft and damage.

What Paperwork Is Needed For International Shipments To the Dominican Republic?

When shipping goods to the Dominican Republic, there are several documents required, some of which are specific to the nature of the goods being shipped. Below is a summary of the documents required based on different types of shipments:

Certification for Preferential Tariff Treatment (CAFTA-DR): For U.S. exports to the Dominican Republic seeking preferential tariff treatment under the Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR), Dominican importers need to present certification to the Dominican General Customs Directorate (Dirección General de Aduanas).

This certification should include the name and contact information of the certifying person, tariff classification, a description of the good, information demonstrating the origin of the good, and the date of certification.

For blanket period certifications, the applicable time period should also be included. Import licenses are generally not required except for specific products like pharmaceuticals, agricultural products, and agrochemicals.

For pharmaceuticals, a Sanitary Register must be obtained from the Ministry of Public Health for each trademark/product imported.

Online Customs Clearance: The Dominican Customs Office provides an online service that allows for pre-arrival clearance. Importers can register the importation, submit documentation, and verify and pay the necessary taxes before the arrival of the shipment.

This process can significantly speed up customs clearance, which typically takes three days from the submission of complete documentation.

Customs Offices: There are several Customs offices in the Dominican Republic, including eleven at ports, seven in airport zones, and six on the border with Haiti.

The principal offices handling the majority of cargo are Port of Haina Oriental, Port of Haina Occidental, Caucedo Multimodal Port, Las Américas International Airport, and the Port of San Pedro de Macorís.

What Are The Regulations And Restrictions When Exporting to the Dominican Republic?

When exporting goods to the Dominican Republic, various regulations and restrictions apply, some of which are outlined below:

CAFTA-DR Implementation and Agricultural Products: While the Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR) has eliminated most trade barriers for imports from the U.S., there are still technical barriers and issues related to its implementation.

Particularly, agricultural products that compete with local industries in the Dominican Republic are subject to more stringent restrictions. Importers must obtain special import permits for all agricultural products, which can sometimes be challenging to obtain in a timely manner.

Certain agricultural products like milk, cheese, rice, and poultry are subject to higher duty rates. However, under CAFTA-DR, these higher duties are being gradually phased out.

Customs Clearance and Online Customs Clearance Service: The Dominican Republic has over 24 Customs offices, including ones at ports, airport zones, and on the border with Haiti. The principal offices that handle most cargo are located in the ports of Haina Oriental, Haina Occidental, Caucedo Multimodal Port, Las Américas International Airport, and the Port of San Pedro de Macorís.

Dominican Customs officials indicate that the average clearance takes three days after submitting complete documentation. However, there is an “On-Line Customs Clearance” service available on the Customs Office website, which allows for pre-arrival clearance.

This online service can expedite the clearance process significantly.

U.S. Export Controls: Businesses exporting to the Dominican Republic must also comply with U.S. export controls. While there are no specific U.S. controls or restrictions on most products sent to the Dominican Republic, it’s important to be aware of and comply with any applicable U.S. export regulations.

For more detailed information and assistance with trade barriers, you can contact the International Trade Administration, Enforcement and Compliance at [email protected], or visit their website at trade.gov/enforcement. For agriculture-related inquiries, the USDA Office of Agricultural Affairs can be contacted at [email protected] or visit fas.usda.gov.
